Why Student Work Is More Than Just a Paycheck

Student jobs have become an important bridge between education and a future career. But for many, the bridge feels shaky. According to a 2025 OECD report, almost 40% of young people worldwide admit they aren’t sure what they want to do in life, and that number is growing.
A part-time job used to be just a way to earn extra money between classes, but now it can be the first step in shaping a career. Povio Academy is our answer to that. We designed it to give students a real look at what it’s like to work in tech, while building skills and confidence that will carry them far beyond their first role.
Finding Clarity in a World of Endless Choices
The OECD’s latest study across 78 countries shows that young people are three times more uncertain about their future careers than they were 20 years ago. Slovenian students are right around the global average, with about 35% of 15-year-olds having no clear career direction. The reasons include poor career guidance, limited individual support in schools, and a tendency to delay important decisions until the last minute.
Even though today’s students have more career information at their fingertips than ever before, many still focus on a narrow set of “popular” jobs often portrayed in the media, such as doctor, teacher, lawyer, IT professional, or professional athlete. Meanwhile, highly in-demand roles in fields like engineering, skilled trades, and other technical professions are often overlooked, sometimes dismissed as too physically demanding or lacking prestige.
The result is a growing gap between what young people aspire to and what the labor market needs. And that gap is only getting wider.
Young People Want And They Deserve More
Young people today are looking for work that means something, a place to grow their skills, a clear direction for their career, and an environment where they’re supported, not just supervised.

The challenge is that many career systems, in Slovenia and beyond, still focus more on theory than practice. Students often finish school without ever stepping into a real workplace, talking to industry professionals, or testing their skills in a live project.
That lack of early exposure means students are missing the chance to discover what they’re truly good at.
